The Spákonufellshöfði promontory, affectionately known as the Cape or Höfðinn, is a beloved outdoor sanctuary for those seeking a gentler adventure away from the mountain’s rugged terrain. Scenic marked walking trails wind along the cape, enhanced by informative signs that illuminate the rich flora and vibrant birdlife of the area.

For lovers of folklore and fairy tales, a visit to the portrait relief of Jón Árnason—one of Europe’s most renowned collectors of folk narratives—is an absolute must. His likeness is nestled at the start of one of the Cape’s trails, inviting you to delve into the stories of yore. Keep your eyes peeled for the whimsical miniature gate and bridge crafted by artist Reiner Fest, crafted for the mythical creatures „huldufólk“said to dwell in the Cape’s enchanting landscape.

Attractions

Árnes Museum
Árnes is the oldest house in Skagaströnd, and the only one of its kind in the area that was considered possible to preserve.
It was renovated by the municipality and opened in 2009.
Árnes is a unique example of living conditions in the first part of the 20th century and is a typical timber dwelling from that period.
The house is furnished with items from those bygone days.

Spákonuhof Museum of Prophecies
Spákonuhof, located in Skagaströnd, is the Museum of Prophecies where the past, present, and future seamlessly converge.
Dedicated to Þórdís, the renowned soothsayer and the area's first inhabitant, the museum offers a captivating experience filled with surprises for both adults and children alike.
Visitors can explore ancient traditions of prophecy, including rune reading, and gain insights into the mystical world of Icelandic folklore and fortune-telling.

Spákonufell
Spákonufell is a prominent and majestic mountain overlooking Skagaströnd.
It is the town mountain of Skagaströnd’s residents, and many people take advantage of it for outdoor activities, both in summer and winter.
The mountain offers numerous excellent hiking trails and several spots that are considered priceless by many.
The same goes for winter, when locals take out their cross-country skis and trek around Spákonufell, and sometimes even up the mountain.
Brochures about the hiking trails on Spákonufell and Spákonufellshöfði have been published in Icelandic, English, and German.
These brochures are available at various locations in the town and in information centres around North Iceland.
They include great pictures, detailed maps, and fascinating information.

The Textile Museum
The Textile Museum in Blönduós (20 km from Skagaströnd) is the only specifically focused textile museum in Iceland.
The museum is in beautiful building with good visitor access.
It hosts several unique and independent exhibitions of embroideries, Icelandic national costumes, the Halldóra room, which is dedicated to the life and work of Halldóra Bjarnadóttir (1873-1981), and a wool exhibition.
Annually the museum hosts a special exhibition of Icelandic textile artists and designers.
